What's happening at NPA?
Noycelivett Logo The NPA Group expands as we acquire Noyce Livett Ltd

We are very proud to announce that on 1st September 2010 we added another broker to our group. Noyce Livett Ltd of Aylesbury became part of our growing business, giving us an impressive premium income of £30m GWP and increasing our staff numbers to 70 people based in five offices throughout Herts, Bucks and Middlesex. We’re delighted to welcome Laurence Tamplin from Noyce Livett as one of NPA’s new Board Directors and are confident that he’ll help us to develop our business further.

"The strategy for the future is for NPA to continue to grow both organically and through further acquisition or merger. We enjoy the benefit of excellent relationships with our clients and insurer partners and look forward to developing the business further over the coming years. NPA started trading as Nott Pybus 20 years ago on 11th September 1990, so it’s a fitting tribute to our continued success that another business joins the ranks at NPA so close to its birthday." commented Bob Pybus, Director, NPA.

Prepare for potential claims this winter
Heating We recently took a call from a client who’s building was broken into by thieves specifically to steal the fixed central heating and water mains copper piping. About 100ft of pipes were ripped out of the walls and boxing, causing significant damage in itself. Water had escaped from the pipes causing flood damage too. As a bonus, the thieves found some stock of barbeques and also took those.

This is not the first client who’s reported fixed copper piping stolen and it’s something to be aware of. It’s not just your stock you are protecting when thinking about security. It’s not so much the damage and loss, as the time it takes to sort out that you need to consider.

You've heard theexpression "you can insure anything"...
Topgear Plinth ...It’s true! Recently one of our client’s, The Titchfield Group, landed a prestigious contract to design, build and supply a 4 metre high book shaped plinth with a Lamborghini on top for the launch of the 2010 Top Gear book. Titchfield were responsible for the vehicle valued at £280,000, for one week while it was being packaged, transported and displayed for one day at Leicester Square.

The insured’s liability insurance already provided cover for the plinth, so we had to get some cover for the Lamborghini which was not going to be driven on the road but transported. It was a challenge, however Aviva agreed to provide "All Risks" cover for the transit and Axa supplied contingency cover while the vehicle was driven on and off the trailer. We were able to offer event insurance liability with Event Insurance and fire, lightning, aircraft and explosion cover with Axa while the car was 4 metres off the ground.

Some of the covers offered were limited perils and the client decided not to take them all, however, it does prove that cover can be arranged in the most unusual circumstances. Well done to The Titchfield Group for winning the contract.

Why should an employer check driving licences?
Licence Check The primary reason for employers to check the validity of employees licences is financial. A disqualified driver will not be covered under the terms of any insurance policy. This means that in the event of a disqualified driver having a collision all the liability rests with the company and not the insurer. There is also an issue with disqualified drivers using their own private vehicles to make work related journeys. They too will not be insured and in the event of a civil case being brought by a claimant, it is likely that the company and not the individual will be pursued because of their "deeper pockets".

To protect against employees presenting fraudulent licences employers can check their employees licences with DVLA provided that the employee has called the DVLA to give their authority for the information to be divulged to their employer. Alternatively, the employer can make the call with the employee present and the DVLA will speak to both parties.

Licences should typically be checked on an annual basis but certain risk factors should be taken into account. If an initial check shows that a driver has nine points then checks should be carried out more frequently as it is too easy for drivers to accumulate penalty points through speeding.

Employers can never eliminate the possibility that employees will be making work related road journeys whilst disqualified, but by using a risk-based approach and checking directly with the DVLA, they will significantly minimise the chances of this occurring.

Do you have the right policy for your valuable items?
Rings One of our clients inherited some valuable jewellery over 2 years ago and asked for a quotation to add this to her insurance. We quoted the best premium we could achieve with a company other than her existing insurance as the additional premium with her current insurers was very high. It would have meant she paid an additional £250 per year. However the client and her husband decided they wouldn’t go down this route as they didn’t want to pay the extra and left their insurance as it was originally. We pointed out they were not correctly insured but they wanted to leave things as they were.

The client telephoned today very upset to say she had lost one of the rings valued at £2,100. Unfortunately her existing policy only gives a single item limit of £1,500 for unspecified jewellery and therefore was not fully covered. She is now getting the jewellery re-valued so that we can cover it correctly from now on.
